'Becks going is a real shame'
Real Madrid misjudged David Beckham this season and blunderedover their treatment of the player, according to coach Fabio Capello. "We allmade mistakes over Beckham," Capello told sports daily AS onMonday."The sporting staff decided things and I'm responsible forthat section of the club, but the truth is, we got things wrong with him. It's ashame he's going. He has now recovered his best physical and psychological form.He is a great player and is now playing as he did when he was at ManchesterUnited."After playing a bit-part role at Real in the first half ofthe season, Beckham announced in January that he would be leaving the club tosign a five-year deal with LA Galaxy. He was immediately told byCapello that he would never play for Real again because he would not be focusedon the club. However, Capello reversed his decision to sideline the 32-year-olda month later, citing the player's professional attitude in training as thereason for his U-turn.Capello said England coach Steve McClaren'sdecision to drop Beckham after last year's World Cup had taken its toll on theformer national captain in the first part of the season.
"He was very upset atnot being in the national team," he said."For all players being inthe national side is important, but more so for the English." Capello explainedhe would now back the club in trying to persuade Beckham to remain in Spain. "Hewould be a very important player for Real," he said. "If the club told meBeckham was staying, I would be veryhappy."Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said the Spanishgiant's were going to explore ways of trying to keep David Beckham at theclub."The public want him to stay and I want him to stay," Calderonsaid in Paris. Calderon said there was a clause in his contract with the LAGalaxy, which meant that he could stay in the Spanish capital, although it isthe first time such an option has been mentioned publicly.AgenciesDavid Beckham is sticking to his plan: He's boundfor the Los Angeles Galaxy next month - regardless of what anyone says. "Thereis no intention of getting out of the Galaxy deal or reneging on the Galaxydeal," agent Simon Oliveira said on Sunday. Galaxy president andgeneral manager Alexi Lalas said there is no escape clause in Beckham'scontract. "I don't doubt they would love nothing more than to have David Beckhamcontinue with the team. Nothing has changed from our standpoint. We are eagerlyawaiting his arrival," Lalas said. Beckham's contract with RealMadrid ends June 30. Lalas said he expected Beckham to arrive in Los Angeles inmid-July and play in his first game shortly after that. Beckham has alreadybought a house in Los Angeles, Lalas said. Oliveira stressed thatBeckham is eager for the next step in his career. "David is looking forward togoing to the States," Oliveira said.
