Atletico Madrid moved a step closer to the Champions League semi-finals with a commanding 2-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at Camp Nou. Goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth, combined with a pivotal red card for Barcelona, gave Diego Simeone’s side a significant advantage heading into the return leg.Barcelona, currently leading La Liga, began the match on the front foot and looked the more composed side in the early stages of this all-Spanish encounter. However, the game took a dramatic turn when Pau Cubarsi was dismissed after bringing down Giuliano Simeone, who was through on goal. Although the referee initially showed a yellow card, VAR intervention upgraded it to a red, leaving the hosts with 10 men before half-time.Atletico capitalised immediately. Alvarez stepped up to take the resulting free-kick and delivered a stunning strike into the top corner, putting the visitors ahead. The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Atletico’s favour, even though Barcelona continued to show resilience despite being a man down.In the second half, Barcelona pushed hard to find an equaliser. Marcus Rashford, who has been in lively form, posed a constant threat down the left flank and created multiple opportunities.
However, Atletico’s defence held firm, and goalkeeper Juan Musso made crucial interventions when needed.Against the run of play, Atletico struck again. A well-worked attacking move involving Antoine Griezmann and Matteo Ruggieri ended with a precise cross into the box, where Sorloth used his physical presence to outmuscle his marker and finish confidently past the goalkeeper, doubling Atletico’s lead with around 20 minutes remaining.Barcelona’s players and coaching staff were left frustrated not only by the result but also by certain officiating decisions. Head coach Hansi Flick expressed dissatisfaction with VAR, particularly questioning why Cubarsi’s challenge was reviewed while a possible handball incident involving Atletico defender Marc Pubill was not examined.Despite their numerical disadvantage, Barcelona continued to fight and created several chances, with Rashford coming close on multiple occasions. However, they were unable to find the breakthrough and ultimately suffered their first home defeat since Camp Nou reopened in November 2025.For Atletico Madrid, the result carries added significance. It marks Diego Simeone’s first-ever win at Camp Nou in his 14-year tenure and the club’s first victory at the stadium since 2006. Having already eliminated Barcelona from the Copa del Rey semi-finals earlier this year, Atletico now hold a strong psychological and tactical edge.Speaking after the match, Antoine Griezmann urged caution despite the positive result, emphasising that the tie is far from over and that the team must remain focused ahead of the second leg.Barcelona, who last lifted the Champions League trophy in 2015, now face a daunting task in the return leg in Madrid. They will need a remarkable comeback to overturn the deficit and keep their European ambitions alive.Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid, two-time finalists in 2014 and 2016, are now in a strong position as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever Champions League title.
