Given the increasing frenzy ahead of the all-English Europa League final to be contested by Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Bilbao’s San Mamés Stadium, the upsurge of British fans in the city has, in parallel, caused numerous disturbances. In recent days, various Spanish newspapers and portals, among them El Correo, published multiple news pieces about violent clashes between fans of both teams. As a consequence, doubts have emerged in regard to the peaceful nature of the event and the sporting visitor’s conduct.
Tottenham fans vandalize city infrastructure
This week, Tottenham fans met in the Pozas as the report
“destroyed two traffic lights stolen as trophies”. El Correo describes the scenes as a collection of “deeds deemed unsafe for the environment,” before highlighting one fan who “cheeted the ribs” of some supporters for Caglar Soyuncu. There were reports that Tottenham fans were banned to prevent them from doing so, as others were photographed vomiting in the street.
Clashes and heightened security measures
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city, Manchester United fans gathered in Plaza Nueva, with an altercation leading to a punch being thrown at one fan, and eight police officers were forced to intervene. Another incident took place in San Sebastian, 48 miles from Bilbao, where supporters of both teams fought, throwing objects and flipping tables during the commotion. No serious injuries or arrests were reported by police, though one ambulance was called to treat minor injuries.
As a reaction to the increasing tensions in the city, the Basque Government has put in place a ‘protection plan’ to ensure proper monitoring and intervention in case of emergencies during the final between United and Tottenham. Additionally, the authorities have taken secure measures by deploying more than 3,000 heavily armed police officers, and a two-layer security ring has been established around the stadium. Furthermore, the fan zones have been installed 1.5 miles apart to reduce the likelihood of a possible confrontation.
