SILIGURI: Since making his debut for the national team in the 2004 SAF Games in Pakistan, Sunil Chhetri has gone from strength to strength. His goal in India’s 1-1 draw in the international friendly with Philippines on Friday was his 42nd in a national team jersey. Chhetri, who equalled Baichung Bhutia’s tally in the process, spoke to TOI before India’s next engagement — international friendly against Nepal on Tuesday.

Excerpts:
How does it feel to be joint-highest scorer for India with Baichung Bhutia?
I am happy and calm at the same time. From the first goal I scored for India to the one against the Philippines (on Friday), I never had it in my mind that I had to beat someone’s record. Baichung had told me that if I keep working hard goals will come. I am really fortunate to be playing for the national team and captaining the side.
How do you look back at the journey so far with the national team? How have the responsibilities changed?
Playing for the country is one of the best things that have happened for me. I remember all the players I have played with and the coaches I have played under. It has certainly made me a better player. I still feel as excited before every match as I had felt before my first match for India. I got a lot of support from my seniors when I first joined the team. Now I try to help the youngsters in the side. It is a team game, after all.
How do you look back at this year?

I have mixed feelings as far as the national team goes. In the SAFF Championship, we did not begin well but picked up tempo and played well in the semifinal and final. But, against the Philippines we played really well and that’s a good feeling. Personally, I had a great year. I signed for the Churchill Brothers and we ended being I-League champions. Now, I have joined Bengaluru FC, which is a fantastic club. Moreover, I have remained injury-free this year.
What does Koevermans bring?
Under Wim, one important thing is that we have started playing a lot of passes. In Friday’s game, we controlled the ball and made some good moves. It is important for players to be in sync with the coach and execute the plans on the field. That a few I-League clubs are playing on the lines of the national team helps.
Mumbai coach Sulakshan Kulkarni was surprised by Delhi’s approach. "In this era of T20, a target of 348 in 63 overs is not too difficult. And the kind of batting they have, I was surprised they did not go all out," Kulkarni said.
Delhi coach Sanjeev Sharma, however, differed: "If we were playing at home, we would have perhaps gone for it."
