KOLKATA: Come ISL 2, it will be raining megastars in India. Close on the heels of the news that Pele will be flying in to attend an ISL match in Kolkata in October, followed by a visit to Delhi, comes the news of a contemporary superstar visiting Kolkata. If things work as planned,
Wayne Rooney will be in town to promote the ISL sometime in November.
Sourav Ganguly, a co-owner of
Atletico de Kolkata, confirmed Rooney's visit.
"Wayne Rooney is coming to the city in November," he said before leaving his Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) office on Wednesday. The former India cricket skipper has, in fact, already shot a soon-to-be-aired promo on Rooney's visit to India for the official broadcasters of the ISL.
The dates of Rooney's visit have not yet been finalized, but it is likely to be in the second or third week of November. The Manchester United star will have a break from club duty from November 8 to 20, which happens to be the next window for FIFA internationals. England are scheduled to play two international friendlies during that period - against Spain on November 13 and France on November 17.
Efforts are on to squeeze out a two or three-day schedule for Rooney. Kolkata apart, the short trip could also include visits to one or two other ISL centres.
