NEW DELHI: The German Football League (DFL) has announced that the German Super Cup, an annual match between the Bundesliga champions and the DFB-Pokal winners, will bear the name of Franz Beckenbauer starting from the 2025 edition.

This decision is a tribute to the late football legend, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 78.

Beckenbauer, affectionately known as 'Der Kaiser' (The Emperor), was one of the greatest players of all time, renowned for his dominant and influential style on the field.

During his illustrious career, he won the Bundesliga five times as a player (1969, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1982) and the German Cup four times (1966, 1969, 1969, and 1971).


The DFL's statement confirmed that "The annual duel between the German champion and the German Cup winner will in future be called the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup.

This name change is a fitting honor for Beckenbauer's immense contributions to German football and his status as an iconic figure in the sport.

The inaugural edition of the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup is scheduled to take place on August 16, 2025, marking the start of a new era for the prestigious curtain-raiser to the German football season.
