Zhong Kui from Chinese Folklore:

  • Zhong Kui is a famous figure in Chinese Mythology revered as the “Great God of Demon Exorcism” and “God of Ghost Slaying”.
  • According to legend, Zhong Kui was originally a talented scholar from the Tang Dynasty.
  • But suffered unjust treatment in the imperial examinations as the emperor rejected him due to his ugly appearance.
  • In the Ming dynasty novel, Tang Zhong Kui Quan Zhuan, Zhong Kui is explicitly depicted as having a head like a leopard, eyes like rings, a face like iron and curly cheek beard.
  • After facing rejection from the emperor based on his looks, Zhong Kui felt extremely humiliated, and he took his own life by striking his head against the palace pillar in anger.
  • Moved by his loyalty, the emperor honoured him with a proper burial.
  • After Zhong Kui's death, his soul travelled the realm of the Underworld and met King Yama (Chinese Pinyin: Yanluo Wang).
  • King Yama recognised his potential and entrusted him with the task of ghost hunting.

Demon Exorcist Legend:

  • The most famous legend of Zhong Kui originates from Emperor Xuanzong of Tang.
  • When the emperor was suffering from a serious illness, he dreamt of a little ghost stealing treasures from the palace.
  • As the ghost was about to steal from the Emperor's palace, a huge fierce looking mighty figure stormed in and devoured the ghost.
  • The emperor dreamed of the mighty figure calling himself Zhong Kui.
  • After waking up from his dream, the emperor's illness significantly improved.
  • So, he ordered the painter to paint Zhong Kui’s image based on what he saw in the dream.
  • Since then, Zhong Kui’s image has become an important symbol of warding off evil spirits in ancient Chinese culture.
