Since everyone has a different definition of "scary," the horror genre can experiment with many different elements. You must survive a variety of scares in horror games in order to reach the finale. Many things that are commonly regarded as frightening are, as far as we are aware, only found in fiction, such as ghouls and monsters.

5. Outlast - Project MKUltra

You take on the role of a journalist looking into an asylum where many of the patients had undergone MKUltra-like experiments. It goes without saying that they are no longer sane and will stop at nothing to kill you. 4. Neverending Nightmares - A Developer's Inner Struggles

Occasionally, your stories are not inspired by outside forces. This is the case with Neverending Nightmares, a psychological horror game that was inspired by the lead designer's battles with his mental illness. The game was inspired by Matt Gilgenbach's struggle with depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, which he is open about.

The protagonist awakens from a nightmare in Neverending Nightmares. He's not really awake yet, though. 2. Resident Evil Village - Elizabeth Bathory

Even if you haven't played Resident Evil Village, you've probably heard of Lady Dimitrescu. Many fans fell in love with this legendary evil mistress. Accepting someone's evil deeds when they are real is more difficult. A noblewoman named Elizabeth Bathory is accused of torturing young women repeatedly before killing them.

She is alleged to have bit off her victims' flesh and bathed in their blood, among other vampire-related behaviors. It is also reported that her husband gave her clawed gloves so she could use them to discipline servants. In addition to being a vampire, Lady Dimitrescu is a noblewoman who wears similar gloves for a similar torturous purpose. The servants who allegedly assisted Bathory with her deeds—three of whom were subsequently put to death—are also the model for her three daughters.

1. Five Nights At Freddy's - Murder In Chuck E. Cheese

There are several obvious similarities between Chuck E. Cheese and the setting of Five Nights at Freddy's, and this is most obviously not a coincidence. An actual 1993 murder case in Aurora, Colorado, served as the basis for the gory animatronics. A former employee shot four Chuck E. Cheese employees as they were cleaning up after closing for the evening, tragically killing them and badly injuring one.

You take on the role of a security guard in the game, responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly each night. But you should be more concerned about yourself when the place's famous animatronics come to life. The game was obviously not inspired by actual animatronics that developed awareness and killed humans, but it does demonstrate how gloomy, realistic occurrences may evoke fear that is only possible in fiction.
