What are Minecraft Capes?


Capes are decorative items that drape over the shoulders of your character, separate from their skin. They do not affect the gameplay. However, they can modify the Elytra wing's appearance, making them cooler.


The Capes are rare. They are often tied to achievements, contributions to the games, or special events.

How to Get a Cape in Minecraft?


To get to the Cape, you can follow the steps below.


Migrate Mojang Account



If you migrated the Mojang account to the Microsoft account during the 2020 transition, you will be awarded Migrator Cape, an exclusive. Unfortunately, this one Cape isn't available for the new accounts. So, if you have already migrated, go ahead and check your inventory.



Own Bedrock and Java Editions



The players owning both the Bedrock and Java editions before June 6th, 2022, received Vanilla Cape as part of the thank-you gift from Mojang. The Cape is available in both versions of the game. But if you missed the deadline, you are out of luck.



Participate in the Official Events



The players get rewarded by Mojang, with Capes, during the special events. For example,



Anniversary Celebrations



In 2024, during the 15th-anniversary celebration of Minecraft, the players earned a Purple Heart Cape just by watching the Twitch streams. Some even earned the TikTok Cape by engaging with Minecraft's TikTok content.



Minecraft Live



To watch the annual Minecraft Live stream, granted occasional exclusive Capes previously. So, try your luck.



Minecraft Championships (MCC)



During the MCC event in 2024, completing the challenges players were rewarded with MC Champs Cape.



Play the Bedrock Edition



The Bedrock players have access to Pan Cape, the fun pancake-themed Cape. It's available in the Dressing Room. Also, some other Capes, including Founder's Cape, were given to some of the early Bedrock adopters.



Contribute to Minecraft



If you have any brilliant ideas for the Minecraft game, Mojang can give you your personal Cape. They are known to reward the players with custom Capes by suggesting features, like Turtles addition. So, if you are feeling creative, pitch the idea to Developers!



Use the Mods (only Java Edition)


If the official Capes are exclusive, the Mods like Optifine or Advanced Capes Mod can help you.




While the Capes are visible only to you or the other players with similar mods, they provide endless customization choices.



How to Equip your Cape?



Java Edition


  • Open Minecraft Launcher and go to the Skins tab.
  • Select the Skin and click on the option Edit to choose the Cape.
  • Save the made changes and then launch the game.

Bedrock Edition


  • Launch Minecraft and open the Dressing Room.
  • Click on the Capes tab and select the desired Cape.
  • Choose the Equip option to wear the Cape.
