The
Grand Theft Auto franchise is no stranger to delays. While most insider reports coming in from Rockstar indicate that GTA 6 will be released in the second half of 2025, PC hardware company Corsair Gaming referenced the game’s unannounced port in its latest earnings call and stated that GTA 6 would leave the console in early 2026. This has led fans to question when GTA 6 might be released after all, and most importantly, will it experience similar delays as GTA 5?
Fans Wonder About GTA 6 PC Release; Is It Coming This Year?
The official release date of GTA 6 is still September 17, 2025. GTA 5 came out in 2013 and fans have hilariously noted that If GTA 6 gets delayed to 2026, you could fit every GTA game ever released (including expansions and remasters) in the gap between GTA V and GTA VI being released. Given that practically all of Rockstar Games’ in-house projects in the last two decades have been delayed after revealing an official release date, there’s a good chance that GTA 6 will be pushed back too. After all, the scale of the upcoming title is immense, and Rockstar will want to be certain that it lives up to a decade of hype.
Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij recently tweeted about GTA 6’s current fall 2025 release window on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. “The decision to delay GTA 4 was made four months or so before the original release date,” Vermeij said. “Any further and it's hard to make the call. Rockstar is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish.”
Vermeij added that the studio won’t rush the game out to hit a release date because this game will be selling beyond the next decade. “GTA 6 will sell for 10 plus years and there is no competition to worry about,” Vermeij said. “They are not going to release the game until they're 100% happy with it. No matter what it said in the trailer.”
This is somewhat similar to what happened with GTA 5. Rockstar announced a scheduled 2013 release and also started accepting pre-orders on 5 November but towards the end of January, the company announced the release date had been postponed until 17 September of that year.
"It simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require", Rockstar stated in a press release.
On 23 August 2013, reports stated that some European PlayStation 3 users who had pre-ordered GTA V were able to download parts of the game, including its soundtrack. Eventually Sony removed the pre-order file from the European PlayStation Network and released an official apology to Rockstar and its fans. Rockstar also admitted to being disappointed by leaks and spoilers. The game was released in Japan on 10 October, the PC version was delayed three times: first to 27 January 2015, later to 24 March and again to 14 April.
So, it’s not unusual for fans to be anxious about GTA 6’s release especially since the franchise has a storied history with delays. In September 2024, Rockstar Games news account billsyliamgta claimed on X that the game has been delayed till mid-2026, but there have been no evidence to support this theory.
“EXCLUSIVE: GTA VI has been internally delayed by Rockstar Games and they’re already decided on the early to mid-2026 release window. PC is planned for around 12 – 18 months after the console launch. This information comes from multiple devs across two studios,” the tweet read.
As of right now, no insider profiles have corroborated this information and nothing is official until it comes from Rockstar or Take-Two. Since the launch of the trailer, the 2025 release date has been removed from marketing materials but in mid-May, Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that GTA 6 is on track for its autumn release window.
