3 Things GTA San Andreas Did Better Than GTA 5

The Grand Theft Auto franchise has given players some of the most immersive open world experiences in gaming history. While GTA 5 is the franchise’s most commercially successful entry, many fans still believe that GTA San Andreas (2004) holds a special place in the series. With its gripping storyline, diverse map, and unique role-playing elements, San Andreas offered a gameplay experience that many argue GTA 5 never quite matched. Here are three key areas where GTA San Andreas outshines its modern counterpart.

1. A More Engaging Storyline and Character Development

One of San Andreas’ biggest strengths is its compelling storyline. Players take on the role of Carl "CJ" Johnson, a young man returning to his hometown to rebuild his gang and uncover the truth behind his mother’s murder. The game explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and personal growth, making CJ one of the most relatable protagonists in the series.

In contrast, GTA 5 introduces three protagonists - Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. While this approach offers variety, it also makes the story feel somewhat fragmented. CJ’s personal journey, from an outcast to a respected leader, creates an emotional connection that GTA 5 struggles to replicate.

2. A More Diverse and Lively Map

Los Santos in GTA 5 is undoubtedly stunning, but San Andreas had something special (variety). The game featured three major cities (Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas), each with its own unique atmosphere. Whether players were navigating the urban streets of Los Santos, exploring the hills of San Fierro, or gambling in the flashy casinos of Las Venturas, San Andreas ensured there was always something new to discover.

On the other hand, GTA 5 focuses heavily on Los Santos and its surrounding countryside. While the city is vast and beautifully detailed, it lacks the sense of discovery that came with exploring multiple cities in San Andreas.

3. RPG Elements and Player Customization

Unlike GTA 5, San Andreas allowed players to shape CJ’s appearance and abilities. From gaining muscle at the gym to getting tattoos, haircuts, and even changing body weight based on eating habits, the game felt more personal. Additionally, stats like stamina and driving skills improved over time, making the game feel more like an RPG.

While GTA 5 has its share of character customization, it lacks the deep role-playing mechanics that made San Andreas stand out.

While GTA 5 is an outstanding game with superior graphics and smoother gameplay, GTA San Andreas remains a fan-favorite due to its emotional depth, map diversity, and RPG elements. Even in 2025, it’s a game worth revisiting!
