In a thrilling crossover that merges horror with creativity, The Walking Dead Universe (TWDU) has officially joined the Fortnite experience. Starting March 25, 2025, creators can now access an arsenal of terrifying assets, from Walker NPCs to iconic weapons and prefabs, using Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Fortnite Creative. The collaboration brings a fresh layer of survival gameplay and storytelling potential to Fortnite, offering players the chance to build immersive, zombie-infested worlds.
Walkers invade Fortnite
At the heart of this update are the Walker NPCs, true to their terrifying portrayal in The Walking Dead franchise. These AI-controlled enemies are slow-moving but relentless in groups, capable of overwhelming players with sheer numbers. Walkers come with lethal bite attacks that inflict damage over time and can even break through props and environmental objects, keeping survivors on edge.
To help players survive the undead onslaught, Negan, the fan-favorite character from The Walking Dead, will be available as an NPC from April 8, and as a playable character in the Fortnite Item Shop from April 4.
Build your own survival game
UEFN users now have access to two official templates: The Prison Starter Island and the Walker NPC Template.
These pre-built assets allow creators to jumpstart their survival adventure, from escape-style roguelikes to role-playing horror quests. A Flat Grid Template is also available for Fortnite Creative mode, offering an open canvas for custom zombie scenarios.
The iconic Prison Prefab, based on the dramatic standoff between Rick Grimes and the Woodbury Army, is just one of the eight new prison-themed structures now available. The update also includes four prison galleries, giving creators even more visual depth and props to play with.
Iconic weapons and visual enhancements
No zombie apocalypse is complete without weapons. The Walking Dead Universe introduces two standout items:
- Lucille: Negan’s brutal barbed-wire baseball bat, capable of performing overhead smashes and dramatic swings.
- Shiva Shotgun: A powerful, modded shotgun that fires five rounds and can unleash a charged blast, complete with a tiger roar effect.
To top it off, creators can apply the Heavy Linework Post-Processing Effect, lending their maps a gritty, graphic novel aesthetic that echoes the roots of The Walking Dead series.
TWDU islands can be published starting May 16, 2025, but creators must be part of Fortnite’s Island Creator Program and agree to a revenue-sharing addendum with Skybound Entertainment. This ensures legal compliance and maintains quality standards for TWDU-branded content.
With endless creative possibilities, this crossover promises to transform Fortnite’s sandbox into a survival horror playground.
