5 hardest missions in Call of Duty games
Since the beginning of this franchise, Call of Duty has given us innumerable Campaign missions. The modern generation of CoD might be obsessed with Multiplayer and Zombies modes, but still today, Campaign remains the most sought after aspect of the franchise, no matter how hard it is. However, there are some Campaign missions which still give nightmares to the fans.
From 2003 to 2024, Call of Duty has released over 20 titles now. There are even rumors regarding CoD 2025 and 2026 as well. With this bunch of titles, Activision has given us hundreds of Campaign missions. Let’s take a look at the toughest of those:
Not just technically, but also emotionally, this mission is arguably the hardest. You have played this mission in your childhood days, you might have already realized at an early age how betrayal from your close person looks like. Yes, this is the infamous mission where the commanding Officer of Task Force 141, Lieutenant General Shepherd, will kill two of the most loved characters of the game, that too in a brutal way.
After escaping an enemy ambush you have to clear a cabin where you have to set up the DSM to download required info and then comes the enemy hoards. Until the whole download process gets finished, you won’t have any clue from where the enemy waves are coming. After barely surviving this massacre, you have to hand over that DSM to Shepherd, only to get burned on the spot. This mission might not be the toughest to complete, but has to be the toughest to overcome that scene, which is right now popping in your head.
Unlike the other missions, where you had to survive hoards of enemy waves, in Vendetta, your mission was to survive, just survive. In this mission, you are all alone with Sgt. Reznov with whom you have to sneak through the German soldiers to finally kill General Amsel. The major highlight of this whole mission is the “cat and mouse” like sniper battle between you and an enemy soldier from a far building.
Completing this battle in Hardened mode is almost impossible because all you get is the flash of your enemy’s scope to kill him. In the hardest difficulty, that flash just for a second, and even before that disappears, you will be killed. Even if you survive this, you will still have to provide sniper cover fire to your comrades, and ultimately kill General Amsel.
This is the final mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 where Yuri and Captain Price will embark upon a one-way out journey to kill Makarov, the central antagonist of the trilogy. Initially the mission will feel a lot easier as you and Price will be stacked up in Juggernaut suits with LMGs in your hands. However, try to play this mission in Veteran or Hardened modes, and will barely be able to cross the enemy flocks.
Even if you do, the luxury of wearing those suits won’t be long as an enemy chopper will blast off your elevators, destroying the Juggernaut suits and almost burning Yuri. The mission will become more daunting after you leave your suits as there is no stoppage of enemy waves. Again you will have to get over with another emotional barrier when Yuri dies in the hands of Makarov. However, you can’t pause and mourn his death as you have to chase Makarov down where you will finish him off in one of the most cinematic and enthralling battle scenes of the franchise.
Just like Vendetta in World at War, this mission is all about proper resilience and patience. One wrong step, and you are gone. All Ghillied Up might be the most popular missions of Call of Duty, as it literally changed the course of the game. Unlike typical Call of Duty battle frenzy experience, this mission was all about stealth. Not just sneaking through, you literally have to lie down under the approaching enemy armies and tanks with your Ghillie suits and let them pass.
You even don’t have any other path because choosing other ways to progress will lead you to death by radioactive poisoning. After sneaking through and settling in a safe building, you can’t let go of your disguise as it’s impossible to complete this mission with all guns blazing, because no matter how much you defend yourself, you are gonna get killed eventually. And if you hate dogs, then please don’t play this mission.
Who doesn’t remember this mission? The Ferris wheel in this scene still gives the OG players nightmares. The main objective of the mission was to kill the central antagonist of the game, Imran Zakhaev. Playing as Captain Price, you have to set yourself up in a building at a perfect sniping spot. There, you have to shoot Zakhaev from far, keeping in mind the direction of the air. However, you will only be able to chop Zakhaev’s hand as he will eventually escape.
If this sounds tough to you, then don’t play this level, because what’s tough, is after that. You first have to shoot down a pilot of an attacking chopper. Then after reaching the extraction point, you have to defend Captain McMillan and yourself with just a sniper rifle and USP. 45 pistol until the rescuing chopper shows up. And do you know the fun part? Capt. McMillan’s leg will be injured in the middle of the mission, so he won't be able to move and you have to protect him as well.
