WPL: Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt fifties, Amelia Kerr's 3 wickets help Mumbai Indians thrash Delhi Capitals
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur once again showed why Mumbai Indians retained them ahead of the WPL auction, playing starring roles in MI’s dominant 50-run win over Delhi Capitals on Saturday.
The duo came together in the seventh over with MI struggling at 51/2, as Delhi’s bowlers had the upper hand. By the time Sciver-Brunt returned to the dugout after a 46-ball 70, which included 13 fours, the pair had stitched a 47-run partnership off 66 balls for the third wicket, providing MI with a strong platform. Harmanpreet then took charge, smashing an unbeaten 74 off 42 balls, guiding MI to a formidable 195/4.
When MI returned to bowl, they maintained the intensity. Delhi Capitals’ innings never got going, eventually folding for 145 in 19 overs. DC’s top order stumbled to 35/4 as MI’s bowlers and fielders applied relentless pressure. Sciver-Brunt (2/29) struck first, sending back Lizelle Lee in the fourth over. In the next over, Nicola Carey (3/37) dismissed Shafali Verma and Laura Wolvaardt, while Shabnim Ismail (1/14) removed DC captain Jemimah Rodrigues. Chinelle Henry, with 56 off 33 balls, was the only DC batter to offer resistance.
Sciver-Brunt had a below-par outing in MI’s opening loss against RCB but quickly put that behind her, notching her ninth WPL half-century. After G Kamalini’s wicket, she and Harmanpreet focused on steadying the innings, hitting just four boundaries in 6.1 overs. By 12.4 overs, MI were 91/2, and Harmanpreet accelerated, scoring 10 off the last two balls of Henry’s over. MI then added 104 runs in the next 7.2 overs, surpassing the 190-mark.
After Sciver-Brunt’s dismissal, Harmanpreet formed a 53-run, 26-ball partnership with Nicola Carey (21 off 12 balls; 4x4) for the fourth wicket, before finishing with an unbeaten 25 off 9 balls alongside S Sajana (5 off 2 balls; 1x4). MI’s innings ended on a high, powered by the brilliant display from the Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet duo.
