NEW DELHI: Women’s Premier League (WPL) is gradually edging towards an important day as the 2024 edition of the cricketing extravaganza anticipates the much-awaited player auction. The auction, scheduled for December 9 in Mumbai, will see five franchises (namely Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, Gujarat Giants, and Royal Challengers Bangalore) contesting for 165 players for the upcoming season.
With the fates of many aspiring cricketers getting decided on the day, one name stands out among the uncapped players – Vrinda Dinesh, a right-handed batter hailing from Karnataka.
As the cricketing fraternity awaits the second edition, all eyes are on the uncapped players who could emerge as hidden gems.
Vrinda, who recently represented the India A team in a closely contested series against England A, is gearing up for the auction with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Speaking to TimesofIndia.com, she shared her thoughts on perhaps the most nervy day of her career so far.
"It's exciting, I would say. At the same time, I am really anxious about it as a player who always dreams about playing in the top leagues and WPL being one of them. I am looking forward to the auction, finger-crossed," expressed Vrinda, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster that precedes such a crucial event like the auction.
Known for her aggressive batting style, Vrinda shared insights into her approach on the field, saying, "I am someone who likes to go hard whenever I get to bat. This is the approach I like to take most of the time. It may work sometimes or not. But I enjoy dominating the bowlers, and I feel my approach will help my team win."
Addressing the uncertainty of the auction process, she remained optimistic about her abilities, stating, "I think I am a good player, but the auction is not in someone's control. But I know I will give it my best whenever I get an opportunity."
Vrinda emphasised the importance of delivering consistent performances amid the unpredictability of sports, irrespective of whether a player is capped or uncapped, saying: "Whether it's a capped player or an uncapped player, it's very important to deliver at all times. As the sport itself is uncertain, getting picked is usually not in our control. But as an uncapped player, WPL is quite a learning experience to be a part of."
The inaugural season of WPL in 2023 was won by Mumbai Indians after a thrilling victory against Delhi Capitals in the summit clash.
