After investing in multiple sports, Saudi Arabia has reportedly set its sights on the biggest T20 league in the world. What explains a tripling of the IPL’s last valuation?

It’s played for just over two months of the year, attracts top cricketers from across the globe, and broadcasters pay around $15.1mn to telecast each game. Is that why the Saudi regime is interested in investing a reported $5bn in the Indian Premier League (IPL), abandoning plans of creating its own league? Or is this just the latest big-ticket investment by a nation intent on hosting the biggest sporting events?

If one were to look at sporting leagues, the IPL is right up there. The Indian cricket league has gone from strength to strength since it started in 2009. The biggest sports league in India in terms of valuation and earnings, it’s also perhaps the only global sporting event held annually in India.
