How is the weather? Ummm... definitely not as bright and sunny as it was on Wednesday, but it is not overcast either. There was a lot of rain overnight. There are clouds but not of rain and it is just a shade gloomy. The sun is slowly trying to peek out into the middle. All in readiness to begin Day 2 as the players make their way out to the middle. Just a reminder - Nishan Peiris has to finish off his pending over. Usman Khawaja will be on strike.

Steven Smith is in for a quick chat. He says it's nice to get the milestone out of the way which was a long time coming. Adds that he feels like he is batting very nicely and says that the Day 1 track was consistent compared to the last time he came here. Appreciates the way Usman Khawaja played and states that they were just trying to push the pressure back whenever possible and try to just keep batting. Concludes that he is happy to join a very elite 10,000-run club and got a lot of wishes coming his way last night. 

Australia’s goal? Bat Sri Lanka out of the contest. If Khawaja and Smith weather the early storm, the visitors could set an insurmountable total, leaving the home side with a mountain to climb. However, with the weather forecast looking uncertain for the next couple of days, Australia will be eager to accelerate and tighten their grip on the game as quickly as possible. The first ball on Day 2 is set to be bowled at 4.15 am GMT, with extended first two sessions to compensate for lost time. Resuming at a dominant 330/2, the visitors have two of their finest stroke-makers, Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith, well-set and eager to build on their solid foundation towards a colossal first innings total.

So what does Day 2 hold in store? First up, after Nishan Peiris completes his over, Asitha Fernando should duly take the second new ball and will try and make some early inroads. The ball has been turning when new and given that usually, there is more turn on Day 2 in Galle as compared to Day 1, the Lankans will look to run through that middle order of Australia, with Josh Inglis and Beau Webster fairly inexperienced and only the bowlers to follow after Alex Carey. The weather might hold up a bit as well. There are showers expected on the first 3 days and because play has been stopped early on Day 1 - Thursday, 30th January, 2025 - will see the first ball being bowled at 4.15 AM GMT, light permitting. 98 overs are slotted for the day, overrate permitting and the first two sessions will be of 135 minutes apiece. But our buildup will begin well in advance, so please tune in early.
