IND vs SL 2nd Test Day 1, Highlights: Bumrah, Shami sizzle under lights; Sri Lanka 86/6 at stumps, trail by 166 runs

Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami shared five wickets between them as Sri Lanka were tottering at 86 for 6 at stumps on Day 1 against India in the Pink-ball Test in Bengaluru. Along with the pacers, Axar Patel too picked up a wicket. Earlier, India got bundled out for 252 after opting to bat. At close of play, Sri Lanka were still 166 runs behind. When I was sitting inside there was drama happening in every over and the thrill was intense. I didn't want to get out defending the ball because there are more chances of getting out that way rather than scoring runs. In my mind the intent had to be positive and that's what I had decided before going out to bat. When the left arm spinner was bowling, there was no mid-wicket and my plan was to step across and see if there's a single because mid-off was also behind. Even if I flash at the ball it had to drop safely. I did not have it (the hundred) in mind, once I reached the 80s, Jassie (Bumrah) was defending the ball really well and I never thought I have to take the single on the 5-6 ball. It is part and parcel of the game. Today wasn't my day and I have no regrets. When the ball was new it was swinging and seaming pretty good. We discussed in the dressing room that the fast bowlers are going to play an immense role and that's what we saw.

India were look for the wicket of set Angelo Mathews and Jasprit Bumrah has produced the breakthrough. What a performance this has been from Bumrah today. He claims his third wicket. Mathews fishes outside off and Rohit Sharma takes a sharp catch at second slip. Mathews has fallen for 43. Mohammed Shami to bowl the final over of Day 1.

0 0 2 0 0 1 - A tight comeback over from Jasprit Buumrah. Final three overs remaining in the day and looks like skipper Rohit Sharma will go in with the combination of Bumrah and Ashwin. Angelo Mathews (42*) has been superb around Sri Lanka's batting collapse. He will now look to go back to the pavilion unbeaten alongside Niroshan Dickwella (10*).

0 0 4 0 0 1 - R Ashwin comes back for his second spell but leaks 5 runs off his over including a boundary. The third ball of the over from Ashwin was a juicy full toss and Niroshan Dickwella comfortably swept it to the square-leg fence. Axar Patel to continue from the other end.

Charith Asalanka tries to hit him on the on-side but gets a leading edge and the ball shoots straight up. R Ashwin completes an easy catch as Sri Lanka's slide continues. They are now 5 down. 15 wickets have fallen on the first day and we still have 12 overs remaining before stumps.

Spin at both ends now for Team India. Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja operating in tandem after the drinks break. A 7-run first over from Axar Patel followed by a maiden from Ravindra Jadeja.

So, first hour of the third session on Day 1 done and India pacers have completely blown away Sri Lanka's top order under these artificial lights. Two wickets each for Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. Angelo Mathews (14*) and Charith Asalanka (5*) trying to put up a fight but India bowlers have been on a roll.

1 4 0 0 W 0 - Mohammed Shami is in middle of an excellent spell. He had troubled the batsmen in his last three overs multiple times and this time he gets rid of Dhananjaya de Silva. Trapped in front and the Indian camp went up in appeal. Skipper Rohit was not convinced but he still went for review as Shami convinced him to do so. Ball-tracking then confirmed that the delivery was hitting the stumps. De Silva falls for 10 as Sri Lanka slip further.

After 10 overs | Sri Lanka 20/3, trail by 232 runs

A maiden over from Mohammed Shami comes to an end and Rohit Sharma has now brought Ravindra Jadeja into the attack. Jasprit Bumrah gets a breather after a fiery 5-over spell. Sri Lanka in all sorts of trouble at the moment. Dhananjaya de Silva (4*) and Angelo Mathews (2*) trying their best to put up a fight.

W 0 0 0 2 0 - What a start from Mohammed Shami. He castled Dimuth Karunaratne first-ball of his spell this evening. A cracking delivery from Shami that nipped back in sharply after pitching and hit the off stump of Karunaratne. A wicket and a couple of runs in Shami's first over.

Two wickets in two overs for Jasprit Bumrah. This time he gets rid of Lahiru Thirimanne bowling from around the wicket. Shreyas Iyer is once again in action at third slip as he completes a sharp catch. Thirimanne departs for 8 and Bumrah is on a roll with this new pink ball. Sri Lanka wobble right at the start of their innings. A wicket maiden this time from Bumrah. Mohammed Shami now comes into the attack for India.

Jasprit Bumrah draws first blood in his second over. Kusal Mendis goes for the expansive drive and is caught at third slip first-ball of the second Bumrah over. Shreyas Iyer picks up a neat catch. Lahiru Thirimanne then smacks Bumrah for back-to-back boundaries, showing positive intent right at the start of his innings. So, 8 runs and a wicket for Bumrah in his second over.

Shreyas Iyer batting very sensibly alongside no.11 batter Jasprit Bumrah. He is trying to score runs off the first 3-4 balls of the over and then looking rotating strike so that he once again starts the next over. Shreyas is batting on 82 off just 88 balls. Shreyas has played a phenomenal knock here in Bengaluru on this bowling-friendly surface.
