South Africa got a bit of purchase early on but the rub of the green was with India. The bowlers asked questions in the first phase but never kept a lid on the run flow and failed to take wickets in a flurry as well. They found one but till then the batters had already done damage to the scoreboard before walking away. The spinners got some sharp turn as well but leaked runs and a lot of them. South Africa have a big chase waiting now.
On this wicket it is a very good total as it was not easy and the ball wasn't coming properly initially so we had to keep the intent at the same time and I think it worked well for my team. It was important to keep the shape initially and I was just planning to watch the ball till the last moment and keep the shape going. We have to use the powerplay well as it won't be easy to score easily for the upcoming batters and my job was to hit the bad balls for boundaries and keep the bowler under pressure. When the left-arm spinner came onto bowl, I told Shreyas that I will take my chances and told him that he can attack when Shamsi was bowling, because you have to be smart at this level. We just planned and it went our way. I thought 150 was a good total and now the job is to keep things simple and hit the right areas. We just need to keep that discipline and character. We should be able to defend it, but cricket is a funny game and anything can happen and they just need 1-2 batters to get going and our job is to not focus on what they are gonna do, we will try and emulate what we did in the practice sessions and what we planned with the support staff. We will keep it simple.
...The Chase...
What an entertaining start to the series! A box-office innings from India! It was all possible with a great start and it was well delivered by Ishan Kishan. Shreyas Iyer too came out with intent and started dealing in boundaries and both made sure the run rate kept floating around 10. Once both fell, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya continued the good work and both went hard from the first ball and helped India get past 210-mark.
