Temba Bavuma, the skipper of South Africa says it got tight in the end but they stuck to the plans. Adds the pitch was tricky to bat on but David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen did really well. On the bowling, they did well at the start, they lost the momentum in the middle but end of the day they got the results.

1st ODI in a nutshell

India suffered a nine-run loss to South Africa in the rain-curtailed first ODI in Lucknow on Thursday. Invited to bat, South Africa posted 249 for 4, riding on fifties from David Miller (75 not out) and Heinrich Klaasen (74 not out) and Quinton de Kock's 48 after the match was reduced to a 40-over-a-side affair due to wet outfield. In reply, India slipped to 51 for 4 in 17.4 overs but Sanju Samson took the chase deep with a 63-ball 86 not out but it was not enough as they ended at 240 for 8. While Samson was the top-scorer for the hosts, Shreyas Iyer hit 50 off 37 balls. Shardul Thakur (33 off 31 balls) also played some lusty blows but Lungi Ngidi (3/52) took two wickets in the 38th over to stop India in their tracks. Kasigo Rabada (2/36) also took two wickets. Among the Indian bowlers, Shardul Thakur took two South African wickets, while Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav got one each. Proteas win by 9 runs to take 1-0 lead

Earlier in the day, after electing to bowl, India had South Africa in trouble at 3 down for not a lot but a superb 100-plus stand between David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen saw them get to the 250-run mark which proved to be enough.

For India, this innings was about two people, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer. It is because of them India got as close as they did. Had the two not played, it could have been an embarrassing loss for the Indians as the top order failed miserably.

The early wickets and the controlled bowling earlier on did the job. The likes of Kagiso Rabada, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi really pushed India onto the back foot by taking 4 early on. Then there was a fightback from the Indians courtesy Iyer and Samson and then Samson and Thakur. Ngidi though did brilliantly towards the end as he got the important wickets at crucial times which helped his side get over the line.

A solid win in the end for South Africa and much-needed. It though got a lot closer than they would have liked but they'll be happy they held their nerve and managed to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Sanju Samson played a wonderful innings but it went in vain. It could have been a lot more different if he took the strike in the 19th over.

Wd 6 4 4 0 4 1 - With a huge cushion of 30 runs to defend, left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi delivers for South Africa. Sanju Samson (86*) could only manage 20 in the final over as South Africa clinch the first ODI by 9 runs. A poor performance from the top order batters was compensated by Samson and Shreyas Iyer (50) but India eventually fell short in chase of 250. Temba Bavuma and co. take 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The second ODI will be played in Ranchi on Sunday.
