Tony Greig vs West Indies, May 1976

England captain Tony Greig caused huge controversy when he said he intended to make the West Indies cricketers "grovel". "You must remember that the West Indians… if they're down, they grovel, and I intend… to make them grovel," Greig said. The word "grovel" had sinister connotations for the West Indies people, many of whom had slave ancestors. There was massive outcry, especially since Apartheid was a prominent issue and Greig was a white South African.

Former Australia batsman Dean Jones created a furore while commentating on live TV during the fourth day's play between Sri Lanka and South Africa in Colombo. As Hashim Amla, a devout Muslim, took a catch to dismiss Kumar Sangakkara, Jones was heard saying: "The terrorist has got another wicket". Jones was quickly sacked by the broadcaster.

Monkeygate, January 2008

Probably modern cricket's worst controversy. On Day Three of the India-Australia Sydney Test, Australia's Andrew Symonds accused off-spinner Harbhajan Singh of calling him a "monkey". Match referee Mike Procter banned Harbhajan for three Tests, a decision which was subsequently overturned to just a 50% match-fee fine following India's appeal. Sachin Tendulkar later wrote in his book that he heard Harbhajan use a north Indian swear word which is similar sounding.

'Osama' Moeen, September 2018

England all-rounder Moeen Ali alleged that an unnamed member of Australia's 2015 Ashes team racially abused him during the first Test in Cardiff. "An Australian player had turned to me on the field and said, 'Take that, Osama.' I could not believe what I had heard. I remember going really red. I have never been so angry on a cricket field," Moeen disclosed later in his autobiography.

Sarfaraz taunts Phehlukwayo, January 2019

During the second ODI in Durban, Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was heard making racist comments at SA's Andile Phehlukwayo. "Abey kaale, teri ammi aaj kahaan baitheen hain? Kya parwa ke aaye hai aaj (Hey black guy, where's your mother sitting today? What have you got her to say for you today)," Sarfaraz was heard saying. Later, he met Phehlukwayo and apologised.
