Sundar, 25, recently featured in India’s five-match Test series against England this summer, where he impressed with both bat and ball. He amassed 284 runs at an average of 47, including a maiden Test century at Old Trafford, which helped India save the game.
Director of Cricket Giles White welcomed the signing, saying, “We’re delighted to bring Washington to the club for the County Championship. He had an excellent series against England this summer and he’ll play a key role with two big games coming up against Somerset and Surrey.”
A versatile performer, Sundar has appeared in 40 First-Class matches, 13 of which are Tests, scoring over 1,800 runs at an average of 34. With the ball, he has claimed 91 wickets at 28 apiece, including a career-best 7/59 against New Zealand at Pune in 2024.
This move also marks Sundar’s return to county cricket after a stint with Lancashire in 2022, where he impressed immediately by taking a five-wicket haul on debut against Northamptonshire in the County Championship.
For Hampshire, the addition of Sundar provides both depth and balance, as they look to close out the season on a high against formidable opposition.
