CHENNAI:
Ruby Trichy Warriors
'
Murali Vijay may have been dismissed for 99 in his previous
TNPL-4
outing against
Dindigul Dragons
on Saturday, but the 35-year-old did well to cross the three-figure mark against Tuti Patriots at the NPR College ground in Dindigul on Tuesday.
Vijay's sublime 57-ball 101 helped Trichy to notch up 177 for 4 before their bowlers came to the party to restrict Patriots to 160-7 in their 20 overs. The 17-run win was Trichy's first win from 6 games in the season. Patriots, on the other hand, have four points from 6 games.
In pursuit of 178, Tuti remained in the chase thanks to their opener
Akshay Srinivasan's 47-ball 63 which contained 2 fours and 5 sixes. Akshay's dismissal in the 17th over pretty much ended their hopes. For Trichy, left-arm spinner DT Chandrasekar (2 for 34) and medium-pacer M Poiyamozhi (2 for 36) led the show with the ball.
The first half of the evening was all about Vijay's innings. With scores of 81, 78* and 99 under his belt in the tournament, Vijay walked in with a loads of confidence.
The right-hander teed off with a four in the covers region off medium-pacer Senthilnathan (0-29) in the third over of the innings. Vijay scored 40 off the first 31 deliveries he faced before cutting loose.
The 13th over - bowled by medium-pacer Vasanth Saravanan - saw Vijay score 17 runs which included two fours and a six. If his 50 was raised in 33 deliveries, the next 23 balls saw Vijay add 51 more to his individual total. Vijay reached the three-figure mark in the penultimate over. His innings was laced with 11 fours and 4 sixes.
Tuti's medium-pacer Athisayaraj Davidson (4-24) was the standout performer with the ball for Patriots. Davidson removed Trichy opener K Mukunth (6) and Aditya Barooah (0) in the 5th over of the day.
From being placed at 27 for 2, Trichy turned things around thanks to a 141-run stand from 85 balls for the third wicket between Vijay and Aditya Ganesh (56, 4x4, 2x6). Both Vijay and Aditya played risk-free cricket.
Vijay contributed with 83 runs while 55 arrived from Aditya's willow. By the time the two departed in the final over - bowled by Davidson - Trichy had reached a respectable total.
Brief scores: Ruby Trichy Warriors 177-4 in 20 overs (M Vijay 101, Aditya Ganesh 56, Davidson 4-24). Tuti Patriots 160-7 in 20 overs (Akshay Srinivasan 63). Trichy won by 17 runs.
