SURAT: Delhi suffered a huge blow on the opening day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Super League in Surat on Thursday. The Dhruv Shorey-led outfit, who were pitted against Maharashtra, could lose their star batsman, India opener Shikhar Dhawan to an injury for the entire tournament.
Dhawan, who opened the batting for Delhi with Hiten Dalal, had to dive full stretch in an attempt to make his ground but while doing so his pads tore and the woodwork in his protective gear ripped into his knees.

Dhawan who made a 22-ball 24 had not realised the extent of the injury. It was only once he returned to the pavilion after getting dismissed that he found out about the condition of his knee. He was given medical attention and received a few stitches.
“Navdeep Saini has been asked to join the team. He is expected tomorrow. As for Shikhar, it would be premature to say anything at this stage. We will assess his injury and then figure out whether he will be able to play in the tournament,” Delhi team manager KP Bhaskar told TOI after the match.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra slumped to a 77-run loss against Delhi.
Brief scores:
Delhi 167-5 (Shikhar Dhawan 24, Dhruv Shorey 48*, Himmat Singh 32; Shamzunama Kazi 2-20) beat Maharashtra 90 in 17.2 overs (Ruturaj Gaikwad 42; Nitish Rana 4-17) by 77 runs.
