IND vs ENG: Captain marvel! Shubman Gill creates history with career-best Test ranking
NEW DELHI: India captain Shubman Gill has climbed to a career-best sixth position in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, while England’s Harry Brook has overtaken teammate Joe Root to become the top-ranked batter in the longest format.
Gill’s remarkable performances — scoring 269 and 161 — made him only the second player in Test history to record 150-plus scores in both innings of a match. His aggregate of 430 runs is now the second-highest in a single Test. These exploits have propelled him 15 places up the rankings, having started the series at No. 23. His previous best was 14th, achieved in September last year.

Meanwhile, Brook has returned to the summit of Test batting following his stellar 158 in the first innings of the second Test at Edgbaston. He had previously held the No.1 spot for a week in December 2024. His latest rise sees Joe Root drop to second, along with an 18-point rating decrease.
Several other players also made notable gains after the Edgbaston Test. Ravindra Jadeja jumped six spots to 39th following his crucial knocks of 89 and an unbeaten 69. England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith, who struck 184* and 88, surged 16 places to break into the top 10 for the first time, now ranked 10th.
India’s pace duo, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, also rose in the Test bowling charts after their standout performances. Siraj, who claimed seven wickets, is up six places to 22nd. Akash Deep, after a match-winning 10-wicket haul, leapt 39 spots to a career-best 45th position.
In other notable movements, South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder climbed 34 places to a career-best 22nd in Test batting rankings after his unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. He also moved up four spots to 48th among bowlers and now sits at No. 3 in the Test all-rounders’ rankings, trailing only Ravindra Jadeja and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Among other South African players, David Bedingham rose four places to 43rd, while Lhuan-dre Pretorius jumped eight places to 60th in batting rankings. With the ball, Corbin Bosch climbed six spots to 51st.
From the Australia-West Indies Test in Grenada, Cameron Green (up four to 45th) and Beau Webster (up two to 50th) gained in batting. West Indies' Roston Chase (up four to 81st) and Brandon King (up 60 to 83rd) also progressed. Fast bowlers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph advanced six places each to reach 29th and 31st, respectively.
In the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings, Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka moved up two spots to sixth following his century in the series opener against Bangladesh. Kusal Mendis, who scored 124 in the final ODI, broke into the top 10 for the first time. Teammate Janith Liyanage (up seven to 44th) and Bangladesh’s Towhid Hridoy (up seven to 51st) also made strides.
