CHANDIGARH: Yet to recover from the opening match's loss to Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh boys got another taste of being among the Elite teams as they succumbed to a seven wicket loss to Delhi in their second match of the
Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy
being played at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Lahli, near Rohtak on Friday.
In their opening match, Chandigarh went down to UP by 22 runs on Thursday.
On Friday, when Chandigarh were put in to bat, Manan Vohra came out with a purpose, and the right-hander succeeded in putting on a 79-run opening stand with fellow opener
Sarul Kanwar by the 12th over. However, as the openers started to open up, Delhi bowlers dealt a twin blow with the wickets of Manan for a decent 42, and one down
Shivam Bhambri
(5) in a span of 12 balls.
The loss of a couple of wickets stifled Chandigarh's flow of runs, and the incoming batters started feeling the pressure of scoring briskly without losing wickets. The Delhi bowlers took advantage of the situation and triggered a mini collapse of sorts with four quick wickets, including that of the top scorer Sarul Kanwar (50). Ankit Kaushik (12), Kunal Mahajan (8) and Gurinder Singh (1) were also dismissed cheaply and at one stage Chandigarh were seen struggling 117 for five.
Towards the end, a little cameo from Jaskarandeep Singh, who scored 19 runs in just seven balls, took the city lads to 144 for 8 in 20 overs.
In reply, Delhi recovered from a messy start, thanks to a 39-run second wicket stand between Anuj Rawat (44) and Himmat Singh (21) that stabilized the innings after Jaskarandeep sent back Delhi opener Priyansh Arya (7) cheaply.
With the pendulum swinging Delhi's way, Chandigarh brought in their most experienced spinner in Gurinder Singh, who got the much awaited second wicket by dismissing Himmat with the team score reading 61 for 2 by the 10th over. Three overs later, Parmesh raised Chandigarh's hopes with the scalp of Rawat (44) but with
Nitish Rana going all guns blazing for his unbeaten 25-ball 50 and Lalit Yadav joining the party with a brisk 13-ball 23, Delhi raced to the total in the 18th over.
Chandigarh will now play their third match against Hyderabad on Saturday.
