Mumbai: Building on its success over the past two seasons, SA20, South Africa’s premier T20 league, hosted its first-ever ‘SA20 India Day’ in Mumbai. The event, aimed at strengthening ties between India and South Africa through cricket, saw participation from prominent figures including SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith, SA20 India Ambassador Dinesh Karthik, and SA20 Ambassador Mark Boucher.

The initiative highlights the league’s commitment to expanding its footprint in India, a strategic market for its growth. Season 3 of SA20 is scheduled to begin on January 9, 2025, with the final scheduled for February 8, 2025, at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

Graeme Smith emphasised India’s importance to SA20, noting the support from Indian fans and the involvement of six IPL franchises, which has elevated the league’s profile globally. “India is a key strategic market, and the enthusiasm from Indian fans over the past two seasons has been incredible. We’re excited to continue this journey and explore new opportunities,” Smith said.

"With six IPL franchises involved, we’ve raised South African cricket to a global standard with the best of local talent playing alongside some of the best international stars," he added.

Dinesh Karthik, the first Indian to participate in SA20, expressed his excitement about the league’s future. “SA20 is building a bridge between South Africa and India, and the passion of Indian fans will drive its growth.”

Mark Boucher, former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter, highlighted the league’s impact on South African cricket, noting its role in nurturing young talent and preparing them for international competition. “The SA20 has provided emerging players a platform to showcase their skills, and some have even made it to the Proteas.”

The event also featured interactions with young cricketers, who received customised merchandise and met their favourite SA20 stars. This initiative also aligns with ‘Schools SA20,’ a program designed to nurture young talent in South Africa.

As Season 3 approaches, SA20 aims to further strengthen its presence in India, capitalising on the growing enthusiasm and support from cricket fans across the country.
