Escaping defeat in their opening match of Ranji Trophy Elite, Group D, Assam will host Chandigarh in their second-round tie in Guwahati starting Friday hoping for maximum points before travelling to Delhi for their next.
Looking down the barrel till the end of Day 3 against Jharkhand, Assam batters produced a rearguard action on the morning of the final day as they thwarted off an outright loss to manage one point from the match.
The Denish Das-led side will surely try to carry the momentum they got from that draw when they face a side that kicked off its campaign with a loss against Railways in a home game.
Assam will take heart from useful contributions with the bat by captain Das, Akash Sengupta, Sibsankar Roy and vice-captain Mrinmoy Dutta down the order, but they will need their top order to fire for an improved batting performance at Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
Their bowlers, led by medium pacer Mukhtar Hussain and left-arm spinner Rahul Singh, also need to up their ante for a better result at home.
Chandigarh, on the other, will hope for a comeback on a stronger note. Led by experienced former Punjab batter Manan Vohra, the visitors have enough firepower to give the home side a run for their money.
Former India bowler Sandeep Sharma will lead the Chandigarh bowling attack with all his experience.
