HUBBALL: With Mumbai putting up a stiff resistance on the pentultimate day of their
Ranji Trophy encounter against Gujarat here, the only realistic outcome in this match was a draw, and that's how things panned out at the KSCA Stadium on Thursday.
Gujarat, however, walked away with three crucial points by virtue of edging past their opponents to the first innings lead.
Requiring 109 runs to surpass Gujarat's total of 437, Mumbai managed to reach 422, thereby falling short by 15 runs. Parthiv Patel's side reached 820 in 45 overs when stumps were drawn, with opener Priyank Panchal hitting an unbeaten 56 and Samit Gohel contributing 18 not out.
Resuming on 3286 Mumbai were banking on the firepower of Shreyas Iyer, who was unbeaten on 191 overnight, but the young right-hander could not do much, adding only three runs to his tally before being caught by Gohel off medium Rush Kalaria for 194.
At this stage, Mumbai were still 104 runs adrift of their target and it was always going to be tough for the remaining lower or der batsmen to put up a resistance. Nevertheless, Shardul Thakur dug his heels in and struck 56 off 89 balls, before he was the last man out to Jasprit Bumrah, who had him caught by Manpreet Juneja.
Thakur's knock was laced with six boundaries and two hits over the fence. Spinners Aditya Dhumal (8 runs) and Vishal Dabholkar (12) tried to assist Thakur, but their efforts proved insufficient. Bumrah, meanwhile, was the most successful bowler, taking 6-71 for his best First Class figures.
As things stand, Mumbai still lead Group A with 26 points in six games while Gujarat have accumulated 21points off five outings and are firmly in contention for a quarterfinals berth. "The wicket was on the slower side and I tried and bowled reverse swing to get wickets and also restrict the batsmen," Bumrah said after the match.
