(KCA) XI began their preparations for a long winding domestic season on a bright note with a resounding four-wicket win over

Cricket

Association of Bengal (CAB) XI in the Dr (Capt) Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament at Alur in Karnataka on Saturday.

Resuming at their overnight score of 63 without loss, KCA XI required another 180 runs to overhaul the CAB XI target. And they were put on the road to victory by an opening partnership of 181 runs between

Rohan Kunnunel

and Rahul P. The partnership was broken when Rohan got out for a workmanlike 80 (144 balls, 7x4).

Thirteen runs later, his partner, Rahul also perished two runs short of a well-deserved ton. Rahul consumed 163 deliveries for his century and his innings was studded with 14 fours and two sixes.

KCA XI suffered a minor hiccup once the openers were dismissed. Vathsal Govind (8) and Rohan Prem (0) were dismissed cheaply. But minor yet useful contributions from Sachin Baby (17), Mohammad Azharuddeen (11) and Akshay Chandran (22 not out) ensured KCA XI’s victory. KCA XI now take on KSCA XI in their next match in the tournament on Tuesday.

Brief scores: CAB XI 213 & 242 all out in 95.5 overs (Ankur Paul 63, Kazi Junaid 52 no; Akshay Chandran 5/31, Asif KM 2/64) lost to KCA XI 209 & 249/6 in 74.2 overs ( Rohan Kunnumel 80, Rahul P 98, Mithilesh Das 4/77) by 4 wickets.
