Parsee Gymkhana, MIG barred from participation in local cricket after physical altercation

MUMBAI: In a strong step to curb boorish player behaviour during local matches, the Mumbai Cricket Association has barred Parsee Gymkhana and MIG CC-two reputed cricket clubs of the city- from participating in the MCA's senior tournaments for the remainder of the 2023-24 season, after players from both the teams were involved in a physical altercation during their quarterfinal match of the MCA President Cup T20 on March 23.

Many of Mumbai's top players-India's T20 star bat Suryakumar Yadav, left-arm spinner Shams Mulani, pacer Tushar Deshpande and former Mumbai captain Aditya Tare represent Parsee Gymkhana in local cricket. In recent years, the club has won plenty of titles. Both Parsee Gymkhana and MIG CC were barred from further participation in the MCA President T20 Cup, which meant that Victory CC ended up playing in the tournament's semifinals on Sunday.

The MCA has also "officially reprimanded" Parse Gymkhana head coach Vinayak Mane, a former Mumbai opener, for the unsavoury incident. The heated altercation had forced the on-field umpires to call off the match, held at the Parsee Gymkhana ground.

In a communication (TOI had a copy) to the secretaries of both Parsee Gymkhana and MIG CC on Saturday, the MCA had written: "Dear Sir, This is with reference to the meeting held on 27th March 2024 to discuss about the incident that occurred in President Cup match between Parsee Gymkhana and MIG CC at Parsee Gymkhana ground on 23rd March 2024.

"The Apex Council took a strong objection to the physical altercation that took place on the field of play and unanimously took the following decisions:

"Parsee Gymkhana & MIG CC should not be allowed to participate further in the MCA President Cup Tournament 2023-24. Parsee Gymkhana and MIG CC team should not be allowed to play any senior tournament for season 2023-2024. Suspend Ankush Jaiswal (MIG CC) and Tanmay Buram (Parsee Gymkhana) from participating in any Maidan club tournament for the season 2023-24. Suspend Bhavesh Buram (Brother of Tanmay Buram) from all MCA cricketing activities within MCA jurisdiction for one year. Mr Vinayak Mane be officially reprimanded for his behaviour."

In a message which makes it clear that the association will not tolerate indiscipline, the MCA has also decided that "a letter be sent to all clubs to follow the code of conduct rules, failing which strict action will be taken against the club and player."
