'One of the best captains I've played under': Shubman Gill thanks retiring 'cap' Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket at age 38 on Wednesday, prompting tributes from across the cricket world, including a heartfelt message from Shubman Gill who is tipped to take over as Test captain for India's upcoming England tour in June.
Gill expressed his gratitude through Instagram, acknowledged Rohit's significant influence on his career. "India is grateful for what you've done in the Tests as a player and a captain. You've been an absolute inspiration to me and everyone that has played with or against you. There are things I've learnt from you that I'm going to remember forever. Happy retirement to @rohitsharma45 -- one of the best captains that I've played under. Thank you Cap!"

Rohit Sharma's Test career spanned 67 matches, during which he accumulated 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His highest score of 212 came against South Africa in 2019 during a home series.
His Test journey began with an impressive 177 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2013. He finished as India's 16th-highest run-getter in the format.
In the ICC World Test Championship, Rohit played 40 Tests and scored 2,716 runs at an average of 41.15, with nine centuries and eight fifties. He ranks as India's highest run-scorer and century-maker in World Test Championship history, standing tenth among all-time run-getters.
As captain, Rohit led India in 24 Tests, securing 12 victories, nine losses, and three draws, maintaining a 50 percent win rate. His leadership saw India reach the WTC final against Australia in 2023, though they fell short.
Gill is now considered the frontrunner for Test captaincy, particularly as Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and claimed 32 wickets in five Tests, is expected to miss some matches in the upcoming cycle due to workload management and injury prevention concerns.
