NEW DELHI: India lifted their first Asia Cup championship on April 13, 1984 by defeating Pakistan at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium by 54 runs.
There were just three teams that competed in the event in 1984: India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In the first Asia Cup, India finished first with eight points, and they went on to win the championship.
The Sunil Gavaskar-led team defeated Pakistan in the final game, scoring 188/4 in 46 overs with opener Surinder Khanna top scoring with 56.
Sandeep Patil scored 43 while Gavaskar remained unbeaten on 36.
India bundled out Pakistan for just 134 in 39.4 overs, winning by 54 runs.
For India, Roger Binny and Ravi Shastri scalped three wickets each.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah congratulated Team India on Saturday.
Wishing the team on 'X' Jay Shah wrote, "On this day in 1984, Team India won the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup, propelled by Surinder Khanna's pivotal 56 against Pakistan. RaviShastri's exceptional left-arm spin and Roger Binny's impeccable seam bowling further solidified Team India's success - as the duo emerged as the tournament's joint-highest wicket-takers."
Team India is the most successful team in the Asia Cup, having lifted the cup seven times. Sri Lanka comes in second place after winning the prized trophy five times, while Pakistan has also won Asia Cup twice.
