CHENNAI: When

B Indrajith

walked in to bat with India Red's team total reading 99 for 4 on the opening day of the

Duleep Trophy

clash against

India Blue

, a double century definitely wasn't on his mind. "I wanted to play the ball on merit, and the idea was to give myself about 4 deliveries in an over and then give the strike to my partner,"

Indrajith

told TOI on Friday. Indrajith scored 200 to help India Red finish on 383. Indrajith changed the complexion of the game with his knock.

Batting with tailenders isn't something new for Indrajith as he essays that role to perfection for Tamil Nadu on the domestic circuit. "I did not make a conscious effort to play strokes but the idea was to look for runs all the time. In the process, if there was a loose delivery, I wanted to put it away. Fortunately, it worked for me," said Indrajith.

The 23-year-old gave a lot of credit to Vijay Gohil with whom he shared a 178-run partnership for the final wicket. "He batted brilliantly. Gohil farmed the strike well and once we got our eye in, the partnership flourished," Indrajith said.

Understandably, Indrajith felt this double hundred was special for more reasons than one. "I never thought I would score a double hundred in my Duleep Trophy debut, and in doing so emulate my brother

Aparajith

. I think this innings is very close to my heart," Indrajith said.

Indrajith is keen on building on this knock ahead of the Ranji season. "I am constantly working on my game - be it mentally, physically or skill-wise. The target is to remain consistent and score runs each time I go to bat. That's the only way forward," he said.
