NEW DELHI: Mumbai's young off-spinner Himanshu Singh says his recent success in the Ranji Trophy is due to the confidence he gained bowling to Indian cricket stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Singh, 21, was a net bowler for the Indian team's pre-season camp in Chennai before their Test series against Bangladesh.

In his third first-class match, Singh took seven wickets against Odisha (3/53 and 4/77), helping Mumbai win by an innings and 103 runs. He credits his time bowling to some of the world's best batters for his improved performance.

"I had gone there (Chennai) first, and then Ranji (Trophy) happened for me later. I got a lot of confidence after bowling there against big players. The confidence is now reflecting here and I am happy about it," Singh said.

Singh also spoke about learning from watching Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Australian Nathan Lyon bowl.

"I only follow two bowlers all over the world, Nathan Lyon and Ravichandran Ashwin. Whatever I have learned in terms of off-spin bowling, whether in white or red-ball cricket, has come from watching them bowl," he said.

Singh's opportunity in Mumbai's main team came when Tanush Kotian was selected for the India A tour. He is determined to make the most of the opportunity.

"My only competition is with myself. If I perform well, I will justify my position in the team," Singh explained.

Despite his success with the ball, Singh wants to improve his batting. He scored 59 in the previous match, but believes he can do better.
