'MS Dhoni bhai ... ': Suresh Raina's touching words after historic ICC honour sends fans into nostalgia
NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Suresh Raina shared a heartfelt message for his long-time teammate and friend MS Dhoni, who was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
Dhoni, a two-time World Cup-winning captain, became the 11th Indian to receive the prestigious honour during a ceremony held in London on Monday. For Raina, Dhoni’s induction into the elite group was "well-deserved", crediting his calm leadership and the legacy he leaves behind as a source of inspiration for future generations.
"The Legend Enters the Hall! @mahi7781 incredible career & contributions to cricket have earned him a well-deserved spot in the Hall of Fame. From electrifying finishes to game-changing leadership, Dhoni bhai has left an indelible mark on the sport. His calm demeanour, razor-sharp instincts & unwavering commitment have inspired millions. A true icon & legend of the game, his legacy will continue to inspire generations of cricketers," Raina wrote on Instagram.
The ICC Hall of Fame recognises cricketers whose extraordinary achievements have shaped the game's rich history. Players become eligible for induction five years after their final international appearance.
Dhoni’s leadership career is unparalleled — from winning India’s first T20 World Cup in 2007 with an inexperienced squad, to lifting the 2011 ODI World Cup at home, and adding the 2013 Champions Trophy to the cabinet. He remains the only captain to win all three ICC white-ball trophies, turning high-pressure moments into historic triumphs.
As a batter, Dhoni redefined the role of a finisher in ODIs. His unbeaten 183* against Sri Lanka in 2005 is still the highest score by a wicketkeeper in the format. With more than 10,000 ODI runs at an average of 50.57, his contribution with the bat has been both impactful and enduring.
Behind the stumps, Dhoni was a game-changer. His unmatched speed and anticipation set new benchmarks for wicketkeeping in limited-overs cricket. With 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals, and 538 appearances for India, Dhoni’s statistics speak to his excellence, consistency, and remarkable longevity.
