The BCCI initiated the selection process for the lone position in the five-member selection panel in January.

Presently, the West Zone is represented by two individuals, Salil Ankola and chairman Ajit Agarkar. Ankola is likely to step aside to accommodate a selector from the North Zone, which currently lacks representation following Chetan Sharma's resignation.

Former Punjab cricketer Krishan Mohan, who has been part of the junior selection panel since September 2021, is one of the candidates who have applied for the position.

Former India wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra has also expressed interest in the role.

Although the application deadline was January 25, the board still has ample time to fill the vacancy with the IPL commencing on Friday. The Cricket Advisory Committee, led by Ashok Malhotra, is anticipated to conduct interviews with the shortlisted candidates in the coming days.

"There are a few strong candidates who are in the race and they include Mithun, Chopra and Mohan," said a BCCI source.

Manhas boasts an impressive record of 157 first-class appearances for Delhi and was a regular presence in the IPL from 2010 to 2014. Recently, R Ashwin lauded Mithun's batting prowess ahead of his 100th Test in Dharamsala.

Ajay Ratra, a level 3 coach, accompanied the A team on the South Africa tour last year.

Nikhil Chopra, who represented India in one Test and 39 ODIs, has transitioned into a renowned commentator.

According to the BCCI's eligibility criteria, applicants must have played either 7 Tests or 30 first-class matches. Alternatively, candidates with experience in 10 ODIs or 20 first-class matches will also be considered.
