Mandeep Singh will lead the
Punjab side in the
Vijay Hazare Trophy
limited-overs tournament while attacking batsman Gurkeerat Singh Mann will be his deputy, said a release from the Punjab
Cricket
Association (PCA) on Tuesday.
Punjab, who are placed in Elite Group A, will begin their campaign against Himachal Pradesh in Alur, near Bengaluru, on September 19. Punjab are grouped with Baroda, Karnataka, Railways, Vidarbha, Mumbai, Himachal Pradesh, Goa and Maharashtra in the league phase.
The Punjab selection committee headed by Yashpal Sharma has selected a squad of 16 players for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The meeting was convened by RP Singla, honorary secretary of the PCA.
The selectors had put emphasis on youth while picking up the squad, although veteran
Yuvraj Singh is the most senior cricketer in the team.
Punjab's pace attack will be led by Siddharth Kaul, Barinder Sran, Manpreet Singh Grewal and Arshdeep Singh, while Mayank Markande, Abhishek Sharma and Arpit Pannu will be heading the spin department.
Punjab has a strong batting line-up as well. Shubman Gill and Manan Vohra will open the innings, followed by a strong middle order comprising Mandeep Singh, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Anmolpreet Singh, Sharad Lumba and Yuvraj. Gitansh Khera will don the gloves.
Surprisingly, selectors have omitted swing bowler Sandeep Sharma from the squad, while all-rounder Karan Kaila, who had a terrific Katoch Shield, has once again been ignored.
