Karnataka bowlers restrict Mumbai
Mumbai: Akhil Herwadkar’s soiled jersey was reminiscent of the Mumbai batters’ ordeal during their 48.1-over stay at the crease on Friday.
Herwadkar opened the batting, was the last man to be dismissed and, during his 255-minute vigil, scored a 138-ball 60 — exactly half of the team’s total — as the rest of the Mumbai batting lineup collapsed against a fiery and accurate Karnataka bowling display to be out for 120 on Day One of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal at the MCA ground in BKC.
The wreckers-in-chief for Karnataka were Vidwath Kaverappa, Prasidh Krishna and Shreyas Gopal, who picked up three wickets apiece.
At stumps, Karnataka were 110/2 with KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal back in the pavilion.
Mayank Agarwal (54*) who was dropped on nought in the first over, and Karun Nair (3*) will resume batting on Day Two.
Mumbai elected to bat but soon regretted their decision.
Karnataka revelled in helpful conditions. The reward was instant when Vidyadhar Patil (1/36) sent Yashasvi Jaiswal back in the fourth over of the innings.
The Karnataka pacers were all over Mumbai thereafter. With the ball seaming, taking off from a good length and sometimes staying low, the Mumbai batters’ task was to play closer to the body and see off the initial spell. That, however, wasn’t to be as they appeared fazed by the nature of the wicket.
