NEW DELHI: Renowned commentator and former England cricketer Mark Nicholas shared his perspective on the Newlands pitch, prepared for India and South Africa's second Test, which concluded in just two days with India securing an eight-wicket victory.

Despite the International Cricket Council (ICC) deeming the pitch "unsatisfactory," Nicholas offered a nuanced view, acknowledging its poor quality but highlighting the unexpected and captivating aspect it brought to the game.

"Well, it didn't last two days; it lasted 107 overs, which is one day and 17 overs; it lasted just more than one day. I think it was a poor pitch but not a pitch I would condemn. I think it was an interesting pitch," Nicholas told ANI.

He cautioned against adhering strictly to the notion that Test matches must last five days, emphasizing that cricket's charm lies in its ability to surprise and amaze.

Reflecting on the historic brevity of the Test match, Nicholas commended the high-quality bowling and notable performances from players like Aiden Markram, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul.

He expressed a nonchalant attitude towards the occasional deviation from conventional cricket norms, appreciating the sport's capacity to astonish.

Regarding India's T20I squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan, which marks the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after a year away from the format, Nicholas refrained from making definitive comments, stating, "If I was an Indian selector, I would answer that. I don't know what they are thinking about."

Nicholas, part of the commentary panel for the second season of the SA20 league, expressed enthusiasm for the competition.

"Well, I like it very much here. I love the fact that six teams are equal, and overseas players are coming in, so I am really excited. I think India's influence on cricket is incredible, and to bring that influence here is fabulous."

The SA20 league, set to kick off on Wednesday, features a star-studded commentary panel, including Mark Nicholas.
