KOLKATA: Bengal's
Ishan Porel, who has been working his way up the ranks steadily, was on Monday named in the India 'A' squad for the tour of New Zealand.
India 'A' will play two tour games, three one-dayers and two four-day unofficial 'Tests' against the Black Caps. The selectors have announced three different squads, but the Bengal pacer has been named in all of them.
The former India Under-19 World Cup-winning player made a great start to the season, bagging nine wickets in three matches for India 'C' in the Deodhar Trophy.
The icing on the cake was an effort of five for 43 in the final, which helped his team lift the trophy.
Bengal failed to make the knockout rounds of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-over) and Syed Mushtaq Ali (T20) meets this season, but Porel continued to impress.
The Chandannagore boy picked up 10 wickets in six matches in the Hazare Trophy and followed it up with seven wickets in seven Mushtaq Ali games.
In their
Ranji Trophy opener, the pacer contributed in Bengal's away win against Kerala by claiming four wickets.
That Porel's consistent performances have not gone unnoticed was proved at last week's IPL player auction where Kings XI Punjab took him on board.
KXIP's head coach
Anil Kumble justified the decision, saying: "Ishan has done really well in domestic cricket."
Bengal skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran has found a berth in the team for the first four-day game. Wicketkeeper-batsman
Wriddhiman Saha, who is recovering from an injured finger, has been named for the second four-day game. Saha is expected to play for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy tie before flying to New Zealand. He is expected to stay back for India's two-Test series against the Black Caps.
