India tour of Australia: 'Rohit Sharma doesn’t deserve this humiliation' – Ex-cricketer asks former captain to consider retirement

Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has requested Rohit Sharma to announce his retirement from international cricket, stating that the star batter doesn’t deserve such humiliation.

In a significant development, Shubman Gill has been named captain of the ODI side, taking over from Rohit Sharma. Despite mounting speculation regarding their long-term ODI futures, both Rohit and Virat Kohli are believed to have expressed their desire to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup, even though India will play relatively few 50-over games in the lead-up to the marquee event.

"I don’t think he (Rohit) is really in their plans anymore. Everything now depends on his performance," Tiwary told CricTracker.

"If I were Rohit Sharma, I would have considered retirement after this. A player like him doesn’t deserve this kind of humiliation.

"Personally, I don’t think he should continue after being disrespected like this.

"If you ask me, before they push him out, it would be better if he himself steps away – at least that way, he can leave with his dignity intact."

India will play a three-match ODI series followed by a five-match T20I series in Australia.

Rohit Sharma is an undisputed ODI all-time great, with 11,168 runs in 273 matches and 265 innings at an average of 48.76 and a strike rate of 92.80, including 32 centuries and 58 fifties. He is India’s fourth-highest run-getter in ODIs.


He also boasts a fine ODI record in Australia, with 1,328 runs in 30 matches at an average of 53.12 and a strike rate of over 90, scoring five centuries and four fifties, with a best of 171*.

Since first wearing the ODI captaincy armband in 2017, Rohit has led India in 56 ODIs, winning 42, losing 12, with one no-result and one tie. His win percentage of 75 makes him one of the most successful white-ball captains statistically.

Under Rohit’s leadership, India secured the 2018 and 2023 Asia Cups, finished runners-up at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup at home, and won the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai this year. His record in ICC tournaments—losing just one out of 23 games across three events and capturing two titles—is regarded as one of the greatest white-ball captaincy runs in cricket history.
