India squad for Afghanistan series: Rishabh Pant loses Test vice-captaincy, ODI spot
MUMBAI: Out-of-form wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was on Tuesday stripped of the Test vice-captaincy for India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan, with opener KL Rahul elevated to the role in his place. Pant was also dropped from India’s ODI squad for the three-match series against Afghanistan in June.

As expected, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from both the Test and ODI assignments as part of workload management by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, which picked the squads in Guwahati on Tuesday. Senior allrounder Ravindra Jadeja too has been rested from both squads after picking up a knee niggle towards the back-end of IPL-2026.
Jadeja had missed Rajasthan Royals’ defeat to Delhi Capitals on Sunday night, but chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that the veteran had been “rested” and not dropped. “I think Jadeja has just been rested for this Test. He remains a very integral part of the Test team,” Agarkar said.
Agarkar also confirmed that Bumrah was being carefully managed ahead of India’s upcoming tour of England later this year. “Bumrah is obviously getting his workload up. Hopefully, he’ll be back when we tour England,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have been included in the ODI squad subject to fitness clearance.
Rohit has battled a hamstring issue throughout IPL-2026, while Pandya has missed Mumbai Indians’ last three matches due to back spasms.
Punjab pacer Gurnoor Brar and Rajasthan left-arm spinner Manav Suthar earned maiden Test call-ups, while Vidarbha spinner Harsh Dubey was selected in both the Test and ODI squads after an outstanding domestic season. Lucknow Super Giants pacer Prince Yadav also received his maiden India call-up in the ODI squad following a breakthrough IPL campaign. Interestingly, both Brar and Suthar are teammates of captain Shubman Gill at Gujarat Titans.
The selectors, however, ignored Jammu & Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi despite his sensational Ranji Trophy season in which he finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 60 wickets in 10 matches.
