‘Going against assumptions’: Jasprit Bumrah celebrates 10 years as India’s pace phenomenon
NEW DELHI: India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah marked a major milestone on Friday as he completed 10 years in international cricket, reflecting on a journey defined by self-belief, resilience and a relentless refusal to conform. The fast bowler took to social media to celebrate a decade in Indian colours, calling it a continuation of “going against assumptions, opinions and perceptions”.

“10 years of living the dream of the child who fell in love with the sport that made him feel alive like nothing in this world ever could,” Bumrah wrote on Instagram. “The journey of going against assumptions, opinions and perceptions and keeping the belief alive continues, with the love and support of family and God.”
Bumrah made his international debut on this day in 2016 against Australia in Sydney, returning figures of 2/40 in a composed 10-over spell. A decade on, he is widely regarded as the most complete fast bowler India have produced, combining an unorthodox action with lethal yorkers, sharp pace and unmatched accuracy across formats.
In 225 international matches, Bumrah has claimed 486 wickets at an outstanding average of 20.66, placing him just 14 wickets shy of the elite 500-wicket club for India. His red-ball record stands out even among greats: 234 Test wickets in 52 matches at an average of 19.79, including 16 five-wicket hauls. Thirteen of those fifers have come away from home — the most by any Indian — underlining his dominance in overseas conditions.
One of the defining chapters of his Test career came on the five-match tour of Australia, where Bumrah picked up 32 wickets, the most by an Indian on an overseas tour, earning him the Player of the Series award.
In ODIs, Bumrah has taken 149 wickets in 89 matches, while in T20Is he has 103 wickets at an astonishing average of 18.45 and an economy rate of 6.42. His crowning glory came at the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament after taking 15 wickets at an average of 8.26.
