Gautam Gambhir explains what went wrong for India in BGT
Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has offered a sharp assessment of India’s recent performance against Australia, suggesting that the team was on the brink of a historic Test series win. “We were one session, one bowler short of winning the Australia series,” Gambhir said, reflecting on the missed opportunity.
The former opener, known for his candid opinions, highlighted the fine margins that separate victory and defeat at the international level. His remark points to the lack of bowling depth and execution during key phases of the series, something he believes could have tipped the balance in India’s favour.

Speaking at the ABP India At 2047 Summit, Gambhir also addressed speculation about his working relationship with senior players, including Virat Kohli. On the widely discussed camaraderie between the two, he said with a smile, “It’s just two Delhi boys having fun. If that’s a problem, I’ll tell the BCCI to stop posting about it.”
He further added that if he could step into any cricketer’s body, it would be Kohli’s, saying, “He is the fittest player on the team.”
When asked whether he misses his previous franchise role with KKR, Gambhir made it clear: “Honestly, not. I have a far bigger responsibility to take Indian cricket forward.”
With a sharp eye on performance and a no-nonsense approach, Gambhir continues to set the tone for a new era of Indian cricket—one defined by accountability and ambition.
