Mandeep Singh will lead the
Punjab team in the
Vijay Hazare Trophy
, beginning February 20. The Punjab Cricket Association announced a 22-member squad through a media release issued on Thursday.
Mandeep has sustained a shoulder injury while fielding in Punjab’s semi-final clash against Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali. The swashbuckling batsman has cleared the fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Mandeep has joined the Punjab camp in Mohali.
“It was a minor injury, and I have started batting in the nets. I am feeling good and looking forward to the tournament,” said Mandeep.
“The team has several youngsters in it. All of them are very talented. They have performed at the big stage and are important to our plans this season,” he added Mandeep.
Gurkeerat Singh Mann has been chosen as Mandeep’s deputy for the national 50-over championship.
The team has a blend of youth and experience. In the batting department, youngsters like Abhishek Sharma, Anmolpreet Singh, Sanvir Singh,
Prabhsimran Singh, Rohan Marwaha, and Ramandeep Singh are exciting to watch. In contrast, experienced stars like Mandeep, Gurkeerat will bring calmness.
The bowling attack is led by the experienced duo of Siddharth Kaul and
Sandeep Sharma and comprises the left-arm pacer duo trio of
Arshdeep Singh and
Barinder Sran. Baltej Singh is another pacer in the squad.
Harpreet Brar (left-arm orthodox spinner), leg-spinner
Mayank Markande and slow-left arm spinner Karan Kaila will make the spin trio. Simultaneously, off-spin all-rounder Akul Pandove and left-arm spinner Vinay Chaudhary have made a comeback in the team.
Punjab has been placed in Elite Group B, along with Andhra, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, and Tamil Nadu, and will be playing their matches in Indore.
They will start their campaign against Tamil Nadu on February 20.
