NEW DELHI: Matthew Mott has resigned from his position as England men's white-ball head coach, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Tuesday. This decision follows England's semi-final defeat to eventual champions India in the recent T20 World Cup.

Mott, who assumed the role in May 2022, achieved significant success during his tenure. Under his leadership, England secured victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup, marking a historic moment for the team.

Furthermore, Mott guided England to white-ball series wins against prominent cricketing nations including Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Pakistan.

Despite these accomplishments, the ECB and Mott have mutually agreed that a change in leadership is necessary to propel the team forward. The search for a permanent replacement will commence immediately, with the ECB emphasizing a thorough selection process to identify the most suitable candidate.

In the interim, former England batsman Marcus Trescothick, currently serving as assistant coach, will assume the role of head coach for the upcoming home summer schedule. This includes a highly anticipated white-ball series against Australia in September.

Rob Key, ECB Managing Director of Men's Cricket, expressed gratitude for Mott's contributions, stating, "He can be proud of his achievements as he leaves his post as one of only three coaches who have won a World Cup with England." Key further elaborated on the decision, explaining, "After three World Cup cycles in a short space of time, I now feel the team needs a new direction to prepare for the challenges ahead."

Mott, reflecting on his time with the team, expressed pride in his accomplishments and the team's performance. "I am immensely proud to have coached the England men's team; it has been an honour," he stated. "We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022."

This change in leadership signals a new chapter for England's white-ball cricket team. The focus now shifts to identifying a new head coach who can build upon the foundations laid by Mott and guide the team to further success on the international stage.
