KOCHI: Two former Indian cricketers, Rumeli Dhar and Devika Palshikar, are on the radar of Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) for coaching roles in the state.

The head coach position of Kerala women’s team was lying vacant after long-time coach Suman Sharma decided not to renew her contract in May this year and took charge of Odisha women’s team.

Though KCA had originally sought applications to fill the vacancy for the women’s head coach role, they are now deliberating the possibility of absorbing both after the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) interviewed both Devika and Rumeli in Thiruvananthapuram last week.

KCA had received more than 20 applicants for the coaching role, including a couple from overseas. After pruning the list to seven candidates, CAC further narrowed it down to two.

“We are thinking of utilizing the experience of both. While one can handle the senior women’s team’s coaching responsibilities, the other can look after junior women’s cricket and the High-Performance Centre. A final decision will be taken this week,” said one of the members of CAC.

Seam-bowling all-rounder Rumeli from Bengal announced her retirement from the game two years ago after playing 78 ODIs, four Tests, and 18 T20Is in an international career spanning 13 years. Maharashtra’s Devika played 15 ODIs and one Test. However, she has more coaching experience. She has served as assistant coach of the Indian and Bangladesh women’s teams and donned the consultant role of the Nepal women’s team last year. She has been serving as the batting coach of Mumbai Indians in WPL.
