His superb 112-run knock against title-chasing Nottinghamshire at the Utilita Bowl on Day 3 proved vital in keeping Hampshire afloat.

Walking in with his team under pressure, the 22-year-old left-hander showed remarkable composure and class as he stitched together key partnerships: 42 with Nick Gubbins, 58 with Ben Brown, and a crucial 126-run stand with Felix Organ, who remained unbeaten on 71 at stumps.
Thanks to Varma’s century and Organ’s resilience, Hampshire ended the day with just 61 runs needed to avoid the follow-on, giving them a fighting chance to secure a draw on the final day.
