The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) honoured war hero Colonel NJ Nair and cricketing legend
Jhulan Goswami by renaming stands at Eden Gardens after them. The announcement was made on Tuesday.
Colonel NJ Nair, known as 'NJ', received both the Ashoka Chakra and Kirti Chakra, India's highest and second-highest gallantry awards. He is the only serviceman to achieve this distinction.
Goswami retired from international cricket with remarkable records. She took 44 wickets in 12 Tests, a world-record 255 wickets in 204 ODIs, and 56 wickets in 68 T20Is.
The CAB hosted an event to celebrate the renaming of the stands and acknowledged the immense contributions of both individuals in their respective fields.
“To pay tribute and honour the incredible achievements of valiant military war hero Col N.J. Nair and India cricket legend Jhulan Goswami, the CAB on Tuesday announced the decision to rename the spectator stands at the iconic Eden Gardens as a testament to their immense impact in their respective fields,” the CAB stated.
CAB President Snehasish Ganguly expressed his pride in honouring these two icons. He highlighted the memorable occasion as a chance to salute their bravery and accomplishments.
“I proudly rename our stands in tribute to icons, Col N.J. Nair and Jhulan Goswami. It is an honour for me, like you all, to be a part of this memorable evening, which has given all of us an opportunity to salute the bravery and achievements of these two iconic personalities.”
Jhulan Goswami expressed her gratitude and described the honour as a special moment in her life, exceeding even her dreams of playing for India.
“I have never ever dreamt of this moment in my life. I had the honour and privilege of playing for India, but to have a stand named after me is special.”
She thanked the CAB President, office bearers, and everyone involved in her journey who supported and helped her along the way.
“I thank CAB President Mr Ganguly, other office bearers, former office bearers, our dada (Sourav Ganguly), and everyone who was involved in my journey and have helped me and supported me.”
Colonel Nair's son, Shivan J Nair, expressed his gratitude to the CAB for honouring his father. He felt truly honoured by the stand bearing his father's name.
“I take this opportunity to thank the CAB for honouring my father. I am truly honoured that a stand is being named after Col N.J. Nair.”
Former
BCCI and CAB President Sourav Ganguly also attended the event. He emphasised the significance of the occasion and the remarkable achievements of both individuals.

Indian Army, while Jhulan has made us proud on the cricket field.”
